Can you crowdsource expertise? Comparing expert and crowd‐based scoring keys for three situational judgment tests

It is common practice to rely on a convenience sample of subject matter experts (SMEs) when developing scoring keys for situational judgment tests (SJTs). However, the defining characteristics what constitutes SME are often ambiguous and inconsistent. Sampling SMEs can also impose considerable costs. Other research fields have adopted crowdsourcing methods replace or reproduce judgments thought require expertise. Therefore, we conducted current study compare crowdsourced SME-based three SJTs designed different job domains: Medicine, Communication, Military. Our results indicate that derived from samples likely converge with based judgment, regardless test content (r = .88 .94 between keys). We observed weakest agreement among individual MTurk ratings Medical SJT (classification consistency 61%) relative Military Communication (80% 85%). Although general mental ability conscientiousness were each related greater expert similarity raters, average crowd rating outperformed nearly all raters. Using randomly-drawn bootstrapped in samples, found as few 30–40 raters may provide adequate estimates most items. These findings suggest potential usefulness an alternative supplement SME-generated keys.
